HOW TO GET STARTED : The http://www.studyinfinland.fi/ website of CIMO (Centre for International Mobility) is a good starting point for all prospective students. It provides answers to frequently asked questions on studying in Finland, scholarships, traineeships, student life in Finland, etc. The http://www.studyinfinland.fi/ site also includes an 'International Programmes Database' of all the English-language study programmes in Finnish higher education. By browsing the searchable database, you may easily chart what degree programmes are available in English.NB: you can not, however, apply for a study placement to any of these programmes through CIMO. CIMO is not an admissions office, and we can not unfortunately send you any application forms. Please see below for more information on how and where to submit your application. HOW TO APPLY : The Finnish higher education system comprises two complementary sectors: polytechnics (=universities of applied sciences)universities. two sectors have separate admission procedures. Please refer to these two on-line admissions sites for information on how to apply to their English-language programmes:Admissions to Finnish polytechnics (Universities of Applied Sciences). Admissions to Finnish universities (Multi-faculty universities, Universities of Technology, Art Academies)NB: you can usually only apply during certain fixed application periods. Please check the application times and other requirements from the above two admissions sites! The admission offices of the polytechnics and universities can assist you, should you have additional questions concerning the application procedure, admission requirements, etc. The institutions' contact details can be found on the above two admissions sites, as well as on CIMO's http://www.studyinfinland.fi/ site. Those interested in post-Master's level studies (Doctoral studies, research) should contact the universities of their choice directly for information on how toapply. A NOTE ON ELIGIBILITY : Generally speaking, if you have successfully completed your upper secondary education in your home country, you can apply for a Bachelor's degree programmes in Finland. To apply for Master's programmes, you'll need to hold a Bachelor's (or equivalent, usually a min. 3 year degree) in a relevant field. Similarly, if you're considering PhD studies, you need a Master's. In many cases, you will also need official proof of your language skills (TOEFL or IELTS)However, since the detailed eligibility requirements may vary from one programme to another, you should always check the requirements directly from the web pages (or the admissions office) of the institution providing the programme.Remember also that fulfilling the eligibility criteria is, in itself, not a guarantee of receiving a study placement, the admission procedure can be very selective. HOW MUCH DOES STUDYING IN FINLAND COST?Higher education in Finland is free of charge, i.e. there are no tuition fees in the regular degree programmes. However, please note that since the Finnish government does not, as a rule, offer any financial assistance to foreign Bachelor's or Master's level students in Finland, you will still need to cover the cost of your everyday living expences in Finland yourself. The average living costs of a student in Finland are approx. 700 euros per month. Please also see the 'visas and residence permits' section below for the financial requirements concerning student residence permits.SCHOLARSHIPSCIMO has a number of different scholarship programmes for post-Master's level studies and research at Finnish universities For information on these scholarship programmes and the application procedures, please see the Scholarships section at http://www.studyinfinland.fi/ NB: CIMO has no scholarships available for Bachelor's or Master's level studies in Finland. STUDYING FINNISH / SWEDISH: The Finnish universities do not currently offer any "language preparation year" options, that is, if you'd like to study in Finnish or Swedish (our two national languages), you would need to be fairly fluent in them already when applying for a study placement.For general info on language courses, please see e.g. this web page:http://opintoluotsi.fi/en-GB/Studying_Finnish/(for further info you need to contact the course providers directly)However, if you are accepted as a degree student to some Finnish higher education institution, you may usually include Finnish or Swedish language studies into your degree. You can find more info on these courses on the university websites.Learning the local language(s) not only makes your everyday life easier, it also helps you "feel at home" and may also increase your chances of finding employment! STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE (NON-EU CITZENS)Very important information for non-EU citizens applying for studies in Finland: in order to obtain a student residence permit, all non-EU students need to have a valid health insurance cover with a reliable and solvent company or institution. A student must have insurance cover when applying for a residence permit as without it a residence permit cannot be granted.
